The symbolism of the skull is instinctive for human beings. 
The human mind, specially prepared to recognize faces, 
capable of seeing expressions in dots and dashes or simple 
punctuation marks (such as the famous smileys), 
instinctively knows that the "face" that looks at us in the skull was once a human face. The skull's eye sockets, larger than living eyes, draw our attention even if we try to avoid it. A skull, despite obviously being lifeless and actually being nothing more than an inanimate object, exerts a fascination on us much greater than any other bone in the human skeleton, a magnetism that can both attract and repulse us.
